Experience the intelligence and healing power of your own body through biodynamic craniosacral therapy.
I called my practice Intelligent Body, because this is what I deeply believe in - the profound, innate intelligence of the human body and its ability to orient towards health and wholeness.
What is Craniosacral Therapy and why does it work?
All of the structures in the body are weaved together by a continuous, three-dimensional connective tissue called fascia to create an inter-connected whole. An imbalance or a pattern of tension in a part of the body will, therefore, affect the whole being. In craniosacral therapy, we call these patterns of tension inertial fulcrums - the places where the body has stored past injury or trauma.By settling the nervous system and gently releasing the energy used to hold these patterns in place, we allow the body to begin to heal itself. Craniosacral therapists listen to the body with their hands, and I find that being heard this way, without judgement, often for the first time, can in itself have a profound corrective and healing effect.
As a modality, BiodynamicCraniosacral Therapy straddles the gap between what we think of as physical and energy healing. It is light-touch, non-invasive, very gentle, and supportive of standard medical care, physical therapy, acupuncture, and other forms of treatment. It can also be helpful as part of post-concussion care, and studies support its effectiveness.
What happens during a session?
If this is our first session together, we will take time to talk about your history and the particular issue you would like to address in treatment. During a craniosacral therapy session, the client rests comfortably on the treatment table, fully clothed. Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended. The practitioner places hands very lightly at various points around the body: usually the feet, the sacrum, the head, and listens for patterns of tension and health to emerge. At this point, clients often notice that their nervous system begins to settle and transition from a fight-flight into a rest-and-digest state, and eventually into stillness. For so many of us it is an unfamiliar experience. Some clients may drift off to sleep, others may enter a meditative or dreamlike state, or reconnect to emotional states or physical memories. When we have lived in shut-down for a while, it is possible that the first few sessions will feel like nothing much, but as different patterns come up to be worked on and released, a deeper, felt sense of presence and well-being emerges.
How many sessions do I need?
After the first session, we will work together to formulate a treatment plan. Sometimes, one session is all that’s needed. More often, a course of several weekly or biweekly sessions is recommended for long held issues. It takes time for me to understand how a client responds to treatment, and it takes time for the client to understand how craniosacral sessions, which in our overstimulated world can seem quite subtle, are affecting them.
When is it best to wait to have a craniosacral session?
In the event of a fever, acute infection, injury, or any sudden onset of symptoms, it is advised to seek medical care. If you are experiencing significant emotional distress, likewise, it is best to contact a physician or a mental health professional. If you have epilepsy, have experienced a stroke, or another adverse and recent medical event, it is important to let the craniosacral therapist know. Craniosacral therapy is a supplementary modality and is not intended to treat illness.
How does a remote session work?
I cannot answer this question from a scientific point of view. In fact, as someone who was trained as a scientist, it baffles me why or how distance healing works; but as a practitioner, I know that it does, and that consistent and profound results can be achieved with remote work. It's not quite craniosacral therapy- it's energy healing, and for that purpose, space seems to be an illusion. During a remote session, I ask that you rest comfortably at home, putting aside your screen and wearable technology; we have a brief check-in before and after the session, and go from there.
